N-acetylcarnosineAlthough carnosine (also known as L-carnosine) has been known for about a century, its antiaging properties have only been extensively studied during the past few years. A recent literature review revealed over 780 published studies on carnosine, mainly by Russian and Japanese researchers. However, more widespread interest in this natural nontoxic product has only recently been increased, fuelled by dramatic Australian and British discoveries about its antiaging actions. Carnosine (B-alanyl-L-histidine) is a naturally-occurring di-peptide (a combination of two amino acids), found in muscle, brain and other innervated animal and human tissues. Russian researchers and scientists have developed a unique new form of carnosine known as NAC (N-Acetyl Carnosine). NAC is being hailed by many as a breakthrough in eye care and a major step forward in the treatment and prevention of many age related eye problems. Both carnosine and n-acetyl-carnosine are found throughout the human body, but carnosine is not as soluble in lipids as n-acetyl-carnosine, which is soluble in both fats and water, and can, therefore, pass more easily through the lipid membranes of the corneal and lens cells and into the cell interior, where it gradually breaks down into carnosine. When Russian scientists conducted double-blind, placebo-controlled trials on 49 older adults who had cataracts, the researchers found that eyes treated with n-acetyl-carnosine eye drops improved over a course of 6 months and none deteriorated; whereas, untreated eyes worsened. When the same researchers, studied another group of subjects who had some vision problems, but not obvious cataracts, the investigators found that the eye drops alleviated eye tiredness and improved clarity of vision. These studies suggest that carnosine and n-acetyl-carnosine eye drops may prevent and safely treat cataracts without surgery.
